A Unique Beach Day in Ilfracombe
The charming seaside town Ilfracombe on the North Devon coast has a lovely sandy beach and all the usual attractions for holidaymakers. But one very unique and hidden gem that should definitely be on your itinerary is the Tunnels Beaches.
Ilfracombe is a 2 hours drive from Bath House and so if you’d like to explore this coastal town, an early start is advisable to make the most of your day. If you love walking you can explore the coastline between Ilfracombe and Woolacombe (see below).
A Step Back in Time
Carved into the cliffs by hand in the 1820s, these tunnels offer a fascinating glimpse into the past and lead to a series of sheltered beaches, perfect for a relaxing day by the sea. As you walk through the cool, dark passageways, you can’t help but marvel at the sheer scale of the undertaking of the painstaking and what must have been backbreaking work.
Beach Bliss
Once you emerge from the tunnels, you’ll be greeted by stunning coastal views. The beaches are perfect for swimming, sunbathing or simply building sandcastles with the kids. For those with a spirit of adventure, there are plenty of rock pools to explore, teeming with fascinating marine life. Don’t forget your camera to capture the beauty of this unique location.
More Than Just a Beach
Tunnels Beaches is more than just a beach. There’s a rich history to discover, with information boards dotted around the site. You can even learn about Victorian bathing etiquette! There’s also a café where you can refuel with a delicious treat after your adventures.
Practical Tips
- There is a small entry charge and check the opening times before you visit, as they vary depending on the time of year.
- Wear suitable footwear for exploring the tunnels and rock pools can be sharp!
- Bring a towel, sunscreen, and a hat to enjoy your day at the beach.
A visit to Tunnels Beaches is a truly unforgettable experience. So, if you’re planning a day trip to Ilfracombe, make sure to add this hidden gem to your must-see list.
Walking the Coast to Woolacombe.
We also love the huge beach at nearby Woolacombe (12 mins drive from Ilfracombe) and so we sometimes drive to Woolacombe, get the bus to Ilfracombe, spend an hour at Ilfracombe doing whatever, before heading back to Woolacombe along the twisty-turny, up and down coastal path back to Woolacombe. If you’re lucky you’ll spot some seals along the way and if you’re super-lucky, when you get back to Woolacombe the Pizza van will be parked up on the beach waiting for you! Or you could try the highly recommended Barricane Beach curry shack. On hot days remember to take plenty of water. Tip: From experience, be careful where you park and keep an eye on the time as some places lock you in at 6/8pm and you have to pay to be let out!
