A Day Trip from Bath House to the Historic Seaside Resort of Lyme Regis

Share

There are plenty of coastlines destinations just a short drive from Bath House. One of our favourites is the unspoilt and picturesque seaside town of Lyme Regis which we visit as often as we can. Whether you prefer sitting in the sun eating ice cream or taking a refreshing dip in the waters, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. A day spent at this charming Jurassic Coast coastal gem is a day filled with sun, sea, and endless fun! So we thought it might be useful to let you know how our recent trip to Lyme Regis went.

Morning: Departure from Little Bath

We leapt out of bed bright and early and had a light breakfast to fuel our seaside escapade. We packed our backpacks with a few beach essentials; sunscreen, hats, travel towels, a few snacks and drinks bottles and some money for the car park just in case. We donned our walking boots (some beaches are all pebbles and you might struggle in flip flops) and remembered just in time to pack the dogs bowl and some extra water. The drive itself across the English countryside is a delightful experience in its own right.

Mid-Morning: Arriving at Lyme Regis

We always get excited at the first sighting of waves as we descend into the town through its narrow and winding roads. As usual, we head for the cliff-top car park (DT7 3DW) with the amazing views as far as the eye can see, but be warned that there are many steps back down to the sea front, so anyone with mobility issues should be dropped off in the town. We paid for the pesky parking and headed straight down the steps to the shoreline past the beautiful copper statue of world famous palaeontologist Mary Anning.

Late Morning: Exploring the Cobb

Sometimes we visit our favourite independent shops and other times we set off for a coastal walk, but no trip to Lyme Regis is complete without a visit to the iconic Cobb; the historic harbour wall that has graced the town’s coastline for centuries. If you’re lucky you may get a sea-spray shower as a wave crashed against the walls. The Cobb has retained it rugged beauty and it’s where every local bride comes to get a wedding photo, so remember to snap some photos to capture your moments!

Midday: Seaside Delights

I’m sure that Tiffany was a mermaid in a previous life whereas I’m more of a ‘land-lubber’. So while she’s swimming gracefully up and down, I’m splashing about in the shallows! As soon as she indicates she’s had enough, we head to our favourites eatery, The Kiosk, for a cup or steaming coco and one of their famous toasted sandwiches. On the odd occasion, we’ve also be known to treat ourselves to an ice cream cone from one of the local vendors along the front. If you need something more substantial, there is an abundance of culinary delights to choose from, so you’re sure to find something to tantalise your taste buds. Note: If you eat outside, watch out for kamikaze seagulls!

Afternoon/Evening: Fossil Hunting Adventure

Lyme Regis is renowned for its rich fossil heritage, making it an absolute paradise for amateur palaeontologists of all ages. You could spend the late afternoon scouring the beaches for prehistoric treasures, keeping an eye out for ammonites, belemnites, and even the occasional ichthyosaur fossil. Who knows… you might just uncover a piece of history hidden beneath the sands. Remember to take your fossil hunters hammer with you!

Sunset: Farewell to Lyme Regis

As the sun begins its descent towards the horizon, it’s time to bid farewell to Lyme Regis and start your journey back to Bath House. Some of the roads are narrow so it might be better to allow enough time to get home before sunset? All the adventures, the running about and the seaside air, will usually ensure a good night’s sleep, especially for the young ones!

Evening: Back to Bath House

As the song goes “It’s very nice to go travelling but it so much nicer to come home!” It is indeed lovely at the seaside but it’s also great to arrive back home at Aller for a relaxing evening in the comfort of your home-away-from-home. This is a great opportunity to pour some wine and share stories of your wild coastal adventures over dinner.

Conclusion: A Day to Remember

From sun-soaked beaches to fossil-filled shores and a bustling town, a day trip from Bath House to the unspoilt Lyme Regis, promises unforgettable memories and endless adventures for everyone. Creating good memories are an important part of life, and the magical destination of Lyme Regis never fails to deliver.

PS: If you happen to be staying with us over the New Year period, you can still pack your swimming trunks and head to Lyme Regis for the legendary New Years Day plunge!
